HISTORY

Early records show that cricket has been played in Stone since around 1845, but at the present ground on Lichfield Road since 1891.

The first match played was against Fenton on 9th May 1891. Stone scored 134 and bowled Fenton out for 16, winning by 118 runs. The second team played at Aston where Stone Hockey Club now stands.

In 1950 the council started to build on 3 sides of the club which formed the ground as we see it today. The present scorebox was completed in June 1952 and presented by the Supporters’ Club. The pavilion was completed in July 1961 and altered and extended again in 2008.

Stone has been host to many first class matches over the years with visits from Essex, Sussex, Gloucestershire, Leicestershire, Hampshire, Kent, Derbyshire, Warwickshire and Surrey as well as touring sides from Pakistan, South Africa in 1998 and Australia in 1993 who played there against the Minor Counties.

The list of top international cricketers to have played at Stone is endless. From Sir Garfeld Sobers to Shane Warne and includes SF Barnes, one of Wisden's 10 players of the 20th century, who ended his career at Lichfield Road

Meanwhile, cricket has been played at Swynnerton Park since 1892 when the first recorded match with Stone on August 31st shows a win for the home side by 16 runs.

The original pavilion was built in 1912 and avoided being damaged by a bomb which landed near the square during the Second World War. A piece of shrapnel is now on display at the club. The pavilion as it stands today was built in 2004.

Swynnerton Park, also the home of Staffordshire Gents has hosted matches for Staffordshire against Durham, Shropshire and Northumberland. In recent times many junior county sides have played at the ground.

In 2007 Stone and Swynnerton Park Cricket Club merged to become Stone SP Cricket Club. The joining of two clubs sees 3 senior sides playing on a Saturday in the North Stafford, South Cheshire Cricket League, together with a Sunday XI playing in the Stone league and around 200 youngsters playing in numerous teams in both the South Moorlands and R Cherry Kidsgrove & District Junior Cricket Leagues.
